It came to pass in those days
The Christmas Tale
The original story of Christmas, played, narrated and sung by Bärbel Maier und Peer Damminger
Ruth, wife of the owner of a small lodging in Bethlehem has to work the house alone. Her husband Josia is too busy, chatting with people in the alley. So, early in the morning, Ruth has to schlepp wood for the oven and bake bread for her residents, all on her own. Besides that, Ruth is expecting a baby.
While kneading the dough, she remembers the night, when Mary and Joseph were searching for bed and housing. But all rooms at the lodge were taken. So they had to share room with ox and ass, having their little child Jesus been born in a stable.
While singing, narrating and enacting the whole story, starting from the shepherds and describing the kings, who visited the stable to praise the child, Ruth creates the whole holy family out of dough. A fig becomes turban of a shepherd.
And slowly the story of the birth of Christ unfolds, until the dough has finally formed a beautyful crib.
